　　当时，“披头士”们想要做一张关于童年的专辑，这个念头起源于列侬的一首关于过往生活的长诗。

　　这首歌的歌词描述了列侬从家到码头的巴士之旅。长长的旅途穿越利物浦，他捕捉了沿途所见及所闻。然而写成之后，列侬觉得歌词太过冗长和无趣，像是一个白描的日记。于是他决定让歌词更能引起人们的共鸣，于是把主题改成了更广泛意义上的回顾过去：怀念失去的童年和老友。

　　歌词到后来出现转折——列侬告诉人们过去的并非是最好的。这实际是一首情歌，列侬想说的是，尽管他对过去一往情深，但是更爱现在的她。这个转折让这首歌更积极，也更成熟。
